What can I use to cover up or reduce the impact of my vitiligo?

Many people have reached a place where they live happily in their patchy skin. They may not have vitiligo on their face, they may be secure in their personal lives and relationships, they may just not care that their skin is changing, and celebrate their vitiligo.

However, we also know that a number of people with vitiligo find it hard to manage social relationships, sports, work, or intimate relationships.

If you are, for example, waiting to access treatment or facing a particularly important event, or for any reason at all you want to blend in the patches into your unaffected skin, then a cover up option may work well for you.

Currently, many people are using fake or self tans successfully on their faces and bodies, and this is the list from the members of our closed Facebook group of products that they've found useful.

L’Oreal Fabulous Elixir

Vita liberata body blur

Bondi Sands Mousse

Bondi Sands Aero (ultra dark)

Fake Bake Spray tan

Skinny Tan Express Mousse

St Tropez Natural Tan

St Tropez Water Mousse

Cocoa Brown tanning mouse

Palmers cocoa butter natural bronze

Dove Summer Body (dark)

St Moritz, spray or mousse

Dove tinted moisturiser

In addition, people also find that camouflage products work well for them, being long-lasting and a good colour match for their skin. The charity, Changing Faces, runs the camouflage service in the UK and you can book an appointment with them to work with one of their practitioners to match the products to your skin tone. Finally, makeup may be a means of covering up any patches on your face. Our members recommend the following products for the face:

L'Oréal Paris Skin Paradise Tinted Water Cream with a base;

Rimmel lasting finish;

Phoera;

Chanel Ultra Le Teint

Ultrawear;

Boots No. 7 foundation;

Laura Mercier setting powder;

The Ordinary Coverage Foundation;

L’Oreal Infallible foundation.
